MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — It was a script Saint Mary's University men's hockey coch Bill Moore has seen far too many times this season.

In fact, for the 10th time this season — and fifth time in their last six games — the Cardinals got on the board first Saturday evening in their rematch against Augsburg at Ed Saugestad Arena.

In seven of those 10 games, however, the Cardinals were unable to seal the deal.

And, unfortunately for Moore, the Cardinals could not write a more favorable final chapter again on Saturday, as Augsburg's Trevor Doden scored his third goal of the game at 2:34 into overtime to lift the Auggies to a 5-4 win over SMU.

Ryan Griffiths (Arvada, Colo.) got the Cardinals on the board six minutes into the opening period, netting an unassisted tally — his second of the season.

Four minutes later, SMU pushed that advantage to 2-0, as Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) netted his second goal in as many nights — and his seventh of the season off an assist by Jed McGlasson (Kenai, Alaska).

Both teams turned up the heat in the second period, combining for five goals to give SMU a 4-3 advantage head into the final period.

The Auggies opened the second-period floodgates at 6:51, as Ben McClellan beat SMU goalie Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) to cut the SMU lead to 3-1. Bob Marx (Sioux City, Iowa), pushed the Cardinals' advantage back to two goals with his fourth of the season five minutes later, and, after Augsburg rattled off back-to-back power play goals to tie the game at 3-3, it was Marx again, scoring netting his second of the period at 17:36 to give the Cardinals the one-goal advantage with 20 minutes to play.

The Auggies netted the equalizer on Doden's second of the game with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, and the senior capped the hat trick with a slap shot that eluded Schieb two minutes into OT.

Schieb finished with 40 saves in goal for the Cardinals, including 17 in the first period and 15 more in the second, while Justin Lochner made 31 saves for his second win in as many nights vs. SMU.

The Cardinals (1-8-1 MIAC, 4-14-1 overall) return to action next weekend, hosting Saint John's in a pair of conference games at the SMU Ice Arena. SMU hosts SJU in an 8 p.m. game on Friday — it's Senior Night for graduating seniors Tom Healy (Rolling Meadows, Ill.), Vincent Unklesbay (Maplewood, Minn.), Nate Peterson (Cadillac, Mich.) and Joey Nadeau (Winona, Minn.). The Cardinals and Johnnies will then square off at 4 p.m. in the second game on Saturday.
