WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University and Hamline women's hockey teams squared off again Saturday afternoon — and the end result was a one-goal decision.

So what's new?

The Cardinals got goals from four different players — including the eventual game-winner off the stick of Brittany Therrien (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) with less than six minutes remaining in regulation — as SMU completed a two-game conference sweep of the Pipers with a 4-3 win Saturday at the SMU Ice Arena.

“It was another hard-fought game,” said SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team knocked off the Pipers 2-1 on Friday — getting a second period goal from Mackenzie Klimek (Hastings, Minn.) and the game-winner off the stick of Mary DeBartolo (Chicago, Ill.) two minutes into overtime. “I was glad to see our offense come to life a bit.”

The Cardinals scored as many goals in Saturday's win as they had in their last three meetings with the Pipers combined. In those previous three meetings, SMU has gone 2-0-1 — beating (1-0) and tying (1-1) the Pipers a year ago, while adding Friday's 2-1 overtime victory.

Katie Ehlenfeldt (Beaver Dam, Wis.) got the Cardinals on the board first, as the freshman netted her first collegiate goal with just 33 seconds remaining to give SMU its first first-period lead of the season.

The two teams would trade a pair of second-period goals, SMU's coming from DeBartolo and Rory Petrisin (High Bridge, N.J.) — with Petrisin's her first in an SMU uniform — as the Cardinals held a 3-2 advantage heading into the third period.

Therrien pushed SMU's advantage to 4-2 with her first of the season, but the Pipers made things interesting, cutting the gap to 4-3 on a goal by Haley Johnson with 1:20 remaining in regulation.

SMU goalie Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.) made the one-goal lead stand up, as the freshman earned her second win, stopping a career-high 31 shots — including 11 in the third period.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 2-0 in conference play, marking the first time since beating Concordia 2-1 and 3-0 in 2003-04 that SMU has opened MIAC action with back-to-back wins.

The Cardinals (2-0-0 MIAC, 3-1-0 overall) are back in action next Friday, hosting St. Catherine in the first of two MIAC games against the Wildcats. Game time at the SMU Ice Arena in set for 7 p.m.
