ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team is back on the road on Monday, as the Cardinals travel to Hutton Arena for a 7:30 p.m. MIAC contest against Hamline.

The Cardinals got 19 points from Mark Schumacher (Perham, Minn.) and a double-double from Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.), but it was not enough as St. Olaf handed SMU an 80-62 conference-opening loss last Wednesday at the SMU Gym. … Hamline, meanwhile, suffered its first conference loss of the season on Saturday, falling to St. Thomas 80-59 in St. Paul, Minn.

February 15, 2012: SMU put three players in double figures, but a rash of second-half turnovers proved to be the Cardinals' downfall, as Hamline outscored SMU 42-27 in the second half in handing Saint Mary's a 72-51 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the SMU Gym.

Monday's game against Hamline is the fourth road contest in five games for the Cardinals, who play their next two games — Wednesday against St. Thomas and Saturday vs. Crown — at the SMU Gym. … Mark Schumacher (Perham, Minn.) scored a career-high 19 points against St. Olaf last Wednesday. Schumacher knocked down 8 of 11 field goals — including a 3-for-3 effort from the 3-point line — en route to his 19-point effort. … Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) also had a career night vs. St. Olaf last Wednesday, recording his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. … Swiggum's double-double was the Cardinals' second of the season. Monday's game against Saint Mary's is the third straight home game for the Pipers. Hamline opened the season playing four of its first five games at Hutton Arena. Wednesday's game at Augsburg kicks off a five-game road swing. … Saturday's loss to St. Thomas marked the third time this season Hamline has surrendered 80 or more points. On the flip side, HU's 59 points vs. the Tommies were a season-low, and marked the first time in five games the Pipers have not scored 75 or more points. … HU netted a game-high 92 points in a season-opening, 92-86 overtime win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Nov. 17. … Tyler Pannell led a trio of Hamline players in double figures against UST Saturday, scoring 14 points. Victor Easter (11 points) and Ryan Welsh (10 points) also scored in double figures vs. the Tommies. … Dior Ford enters Monday's game against Saint Mary's owning a team-best 15.8 ppg scoring average, while Pannell and Noah Aguirre are also averaging in double figures at 14.6 ppg and 12.4 ppg, respectively. … Ford and Aguirre also lead the team in rebounds with 23 each, while Victor Easter has dished out a team-best 20 assists. … As a team, HU is shooting 42 percent (37-87) from behind the 3-point line, led by Pannell (15-for-32). … The Pipers have outscored their opponents by one point (395-394) through five games. HU holds a 177-170 scoring advantage in the first half, but have been outscored 200-194 in the second half. … Hamline has already played two overtime games this season — beating Wisconsin Lutheran and falling to Macalester.
