LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Talk about a case of bad timing.
After scoring 40 goals in their first eight games, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team's offense decided to head out for Christmas break a little too earlier, as the Cardinals managed just three goals in their two nonconference games against Lake Forest.
Just a day after managing three goals in a 5-3 loss to the Foresters on Friday, the Cardinals came up empty on Saturday, as Lake Forest completed the nonconference sweep with a 2-0 victory at the Alumni Memorial Rink.
Lake Forest, sparked by a pair of shorthanded goals in Friday's 5-3 win, netted a pair power play tallies in Saturday's rematch — one in the first period and one in the second — to account for the game's only scoring.
"It was a tough weekend" said SMU coach
Bill Moore. "I thought we actually played a litlte better today than we did (Friday night). We gave up a couple of fluke goals and that was the difference.
"We weren't as good offensively this weekend as we have been, hopefully we can use the (Christmas) break to heal up and we'll get back at it in January."
Chris Gard gave Lake Forest all the offense it would need, netting his first goal of the season at 5:16 of the opening period, and Will Seeber pushed the Foresters' lead to 2-0 47 seconds into the second period to round out the scoring.
SMU goalie
Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished with 28 saves, while Lake Forest goalie Brendan Sullivan notched his second straight victory over the Cardinals, finishing with 27 saves.
SMU (5-6 overall) is now off until Jan. 4-5, when they square off against defending national champion St. Norbert and nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point in the final two nonconference games of the season for the Cardinals.
