MOORHEAD, Minn. — After scoring a season-high five goals in a 5-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Concordia on Friday, Saint Mary's
University men's hockey coach Bill Moore was looking for a repeat performance when the two teams squared off again Saturday afternoon at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Unfortunately for Moore, the Cardinals' six-shooters fired nothing but blanks Saturday — while the Cobbers came out with guns a blazing, scoring five goals in a 13-minute span of the second period in handing SMU a 7-0, season-ending setback.

“Obviously, that's not the way we wanted the season to end,” said Moore. “I didn't think we played all that poorly, but the (scoring) chances we capitalized on Friday, we weren't capitalizing on today.

“We had more than our share of good chances, we just couldn't put the puck in the net.”

Concordia scored the only goal of the first period on a Pat Deitz tally midway through the period. Braden Rahman made it 2-0 two minutes into the second period, and the flood gates opened, as Marc Harrie would score twice, and Mark McHaughton and Brian Kang would add goals before the 14-minute mark to give the Cobbers a commanding 6-0 advantage head into the third period.

Andrew Deters closed out the scoring with his first of the season at 18:42, and Glen Gayet picked up his first collegiate shutout, stopping all 22 SMU shots.

Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) stopped 14 shots in 30 minutes of work, before Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) came in to kick out 11 shots in the game's final 30 minutes.

The Cardinals, who had eliminated Concordia from post-season contention with Friday's 5-1 victory, close out the season with a 5-18-2 record, including a 2-12-2 mark in conference play.
