DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University track and field teams squared off against several unfamiliar foes Saturday afternoon at the University of Dubuque Spartan Invitational.
And the Cardinals certainly made a memorable first impression.
“This was a good meet for us,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon, whose women placed ninth, while the men were 11th. “We got a chance to go up against some teams that we've never faced before — and I think we raised a few eyebrows throughout the day.”
Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) made a triumphant return from injury, placing second in the mile, stopping the clock in 4:29.58, while
John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.) — who won the event last weekend at the Cardinal Open — chipped in a fifth-place time of 4:32.51
Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) and Kassondra Burtis (Fairmont, Minn.) each posted third-place efforts in the shot put and weight throw, respectively, as Booker recorded a toss of 12.44 meters, with Burtis launching the weight 14.71 meters.
Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) also recorded a third-place performance Saturday, crossing the finish line in 5:51.40 in the mile. Beth Scott (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a fifth-place showing in the mile with her time of 5:56.12.
Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) was fourth in the 3,000 (11:33.09), while Kim Puk (Naperville, Ill.) added a 10th in the 400 (1:06.73).
The Cardinals are back in action next Friday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., to take part in the St. Olaf Ole Qualifier.
