WINONA, Minn. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team managed to score two goals against MIAC playoff-bound Concordia Saturday afternoon.
Unlike Friday's 5-2 setback, however, two goals was enough to earn the Cardinals a point as SMU battled the Cobbers to a 2-2 tie in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rematch at the SMU Ice Arena.
“I thought we played much better today than we did last night,” said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. “We shot ourselves in the foot a bit late in the game, getting called for the last five penalties, but other than that, I thought we played pretty well.”
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 second-period lead, as
Breanna Peterson (Macomb, Mich.) and
Erin Stenseth (Eau Claire, Wis.) each scored for the second straight game to give SMU a two-goal advantage one minute into the middle stanza.
That, however, would be the extent of the Cardinals' offense — and the Cobbers' was just waking up.
CC made it a one-goal game at 13:06 of the second period, as Breann Juliue scored, beating SMU goalie
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) on the power play.
The Cobbers then got the equalizer late in the third period on a goal by Kelsey Vandengrift with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Concordia had the best chance in the five-minute overtime, but Gustafson stymied Abby Taffe on a penalty shot to preserve the 2-2 tie.
Gustafson finished with 37 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while CC's Rebecca Hendrickson kicked out 21 SMU shots.
The Cardinals (3-10-4 MIAC, 6-13-5 overall) closed out their 2011-2012 season next weekend, hosting Bethel in a 7 p.m. MIAC game on Friday at the SMU Ice Arena, then traveling to the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine, Minn., for the rematch at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
