WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University track and field teams kicked off their outdoor season in style Friday evening at the Winona State Last-Minute Invitational.

Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) won the 800 to pace the Cardinal men, while Amy Spitzmueller's (New Brighton, Minn.) third-place effort in the 3,000 steeplechase led the way for the SMU women at the non-team scored event at Paul Giel Field.

“It was a good start for us,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon “We've been training very hard and it's nice to have a meet to gauge where we are at. Overall, I was happy with what I saw tonight.”

Borash clocked a time of 2:01.54, edging out teammate Alex Davis in the 800, as Davis stopped the clock in 2:01.97 to finish second. Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Wis.) enjoyed a memorable outdoor-opener, placing second in the javelin (41.30 meters) and sixth in the hammer (43.58 meters).

Spitzmueller led the way for the SMU women, breaking the tape in 12:37.14 to place third in the 3,000 steeplechase, while Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) was fourth in the 800 (2:30.00) and Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) — fresh off a second-place effort and All-MIAC performance at the MIAC Indoor Championships — finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 12.21 meters. Kassondra Burtis (Fairmont, Minn.) also added a seventh in the hammer (44.40 meters).

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Dubuque, Iowa, to take part in the Loras Invitational.
