WASECA, Minn. — With the first-match jitters out of the way, the Saint Mary's University men's golf team got down to business Thursday afternoon.
After struggling to a 342 total in falling to Macalester in their season opener last Friday, the Cardinals shaved 17 strokes off that mark at the Bethany Lutheran Triangular Thursday at the Lakeside Country Cub.
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) — who shot an 83 in his first collegiate match against Macalester — turned in a six-over-par 77, missing medalist honors by two strokes. Carleton's Aaron Buckley carded a four-over 75 for the low round of the day.
Host Bethany Lutheran won the three team triangular, shooting a 307, while Carleton was second at 320 and SMU was third at 327.
Along with Westerberg's 77, the Cardinals got an 80 from
Will Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn.), and 85s from
Ethan Austin (Northbrook, Ill.),
Bobby Glynn (Orland Park, Ill.) and
Eric Zimmerman (Minneapolis, Minn.).
The Cardinals are right back in action this weekend, taking part in the 36-hole Augsburg Invitational. Play begins on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake, Minn., with the second round scheduled for Sunday.
