MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team had so much fun scoring three goals in Friday night's 3-2 win over Augsburg, the Cardinals decided to do it again in the rematch on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, three goals wasn't good enough to get a second straight victory — but it was good enough to earn SMU a 3-3 tie and three of a possible four points in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.
“That was a very good college hockey game,” said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. “Both teams played very well. We would have loved to come away with a sweep this weekend, but taking three out of a possible four points isn't too bad.”
After a scoreless first period, Augsburg finally broke the ice, as Jeanna Dudley beat SMU goalie
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) just 1:05 into the opening period. The Auggies didn't get to savor their lead for long, however, as
Brittany Therrien (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) knotted things up 17 seconds later, and
Katie Ehlenfeldt (Beaver Dam, Wis.) gave SMU its first lead of the game at the 10:05 mark.
Breanna Peterson (Macomb, Mich.) tallied her second goal in as many nights two minutes into the third period to give SMU a 3-1 advantage, but the Auggies responded with a pair of unanswered goals in the game's final 18 minutes to force overtime.
And for the first this season,
Mary DeBartolo (Chicago, Ill.) and the Cardinals were not able to net the game-winner in the five-minute extra session. DeBartolo has scored two of her five goals this season in overtime — giving SMU wins over Hamline and UW-Eau Claire.
The Cardinals (3-6-1 MIAC, 5-9-1 overall) are back in action next weekend, when they host Saint Benedict in a pair of MIAC games at the SMU Ice Arena. Puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday and again at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
