ST. PETER, Minn. — Evan Pederson (Onalaska, Wis.) and Michael Burfeind (Lewiston, Minn.) each scored in double figures, but the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team could not match Gustavus' torrid shooting from the outside, as GAC knocked down nine 3-pointers en route to an 82-43 MIAC victory over the Cardinals Wednesday at Gus Young Court.

The Cardinals shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, hitting 10 of 18 field goal attempts — including a 3-pointer by Pederson — but the Gusties forced SMU into 14 first-half turnovers as GAC raced to a 38-22 lead at the intermission.

SMU's shooting touch cooled in the second half, as the Cardinals hit on just 6 of 24 field goal attempts, while the Gusties were just getting warmed up — Gustavus went 19-for-33 from the field, including 5 of 10 from behind the arc, en route to the victory.

Pederson netted a team-best 13 points, Burfeind chipped in 10 and Mark Schumacher (Perham, Minn.) added nine.

Blake Shay came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points for Gustavus (8-7 MIAC, 10-9 overall), while Jim Hill and Ben Biewen finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Cardinals return to action this weekend, hosting Carleton on Saturday and Concordia on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip at the SMU Gym.
