WINONA, Minn. —
Eric Lindquist unveiled the 2013-14 Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams Saturday afternoon in front of the Cardinals home fans.
And those fans were in for a real treat.
"What a great way to officially kick off the season," said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. "Everyone swam exceptionally well for this time of the year and to be able to get that first meet under our belts — in front of the home crowd — is awesome."
Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) made his first collegiate meet a memorable one, placing second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.52. The Cardinal sophomore was also the team's top finisher in the 100 backstroke, where he and fellow freshman Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) each collected fifths in the 100 backstroke — with Tonda touching the wall in 1:00.64 in the men's race, while VanBeest tallied a 1:15.17 in the women's event.
Rose Berg-Arnold (St. Joseph, Minn.) was third in the one-meter diving (177.0) and sixth in the three-meter (140.85), while
Evan Lecy (St. Paul, Minn.) led the SMU men's divers, placing third in the three meter (137.00) and fourth in the one-meter (144.10).
P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) also picked up a fifth-place finish for the Cardinals, stopping the clock in 23.89 in the 50 freestyle. The sophomore also added a seventh in the 100 freestyle (53.23).
St. Thomas captured the men's team title, followed by Gustavus, Hamline and Saint Mary's, while the Tommie women made it a clean sweep, easily outpointing second-place Gustavus, with St. Catherine, Hamline, Augsburg and Saint Mary's rounding out the women's field.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, heading to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Hamline Invitational.
