MIAC Players of the Week
WINONA, Minn. — It was a weekend of firsts for
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) and the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team.
The Cardinals, behind Gustafson's 19 saves, picked up their first win of the season last Friday, knocking off Saint Benedict 3-1 in St. Cloud, Minn.
A day later, the Cardinals completed their first MIAC sweep of the season — thanks in large part to Gustafson's first shutout of the season, as the senior goalie stopped all 23 Blazers shots in a 4-0 SMU win.
And Monday afternoon, Gustafson notched yet another first for the Cardinals this season — being named SMU's first MIAC Women's Hockey Player of the Week, it was announced Monday.
Gustafson — who has started four of the Cardinals' first five games — finished with 42 saves on 43 shots against Saint Benedict, as SMU improved to 2-2-0 in conference play at 2-3-0 overall with the sweep of Cardinals.
Fueled by her 23-save shutout on Saturday, Gustafson has now notched six shutouts in her collegiate career — including at least one in all four seasons in a Cardinal uniform.
Gustafson heads into Tuesday's nonconference showdown against eighth-ranked St. Scholastica boasting a 3.15 goals-against-average and an .889 save percentage.
