ST. PAUL, Minn. — A week after impressing the home crowd at their lone home invitational last Saturday, the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams took to the road on Saturday — and were equally as impressive.
Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) continued to enjoy a strong freshman season, placing among the top 12 in three events in helping the Cardinal men to a fifth-place finish at Saturday's Hamline Invitational, while the diving duo of Rose Berg-Arnold (Saint Joseph, Minn.) and Clare Judeh (Eagan, Minn.) led the way for the SMU women, who also placed fifth.
"It was another solid meet," said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. "I was very happy with the way everyone competed last week, and we pretty much just picked up where we left of today."
Tonda posted a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:06.07, while adding a seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:00.79) and a 12th in the 50 freestyle (24.20).
Evan Lecy (St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in a pair of fourth-place efforts in the one-meter (170.90) and three-meter (143.95) diving competitions, with P. J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) adding a 10th in the 100 freestyle (52.76).
Berg-Arnold recorded the SMU women's top finish, placing third in the three-meter diving (170.80), while Judeh was fourth in the one-meter diving (181.25). Berg-Arnold also dove to a seventh in the one-meter (177.00), with Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) and Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) recording eighths in the 200 IM (2:30.73) and 100 breastroke (1:17.53), respectively. VanBeest finished right behind Smaron in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:17.69, while Anne Raecker (Cedar Falls, Minn.) tallied an 11th in the 500 freestyle (6:14.34).
The Cardinals return to St. Paul, Minn., next Saturday, as SMU takes part in the Macalester Invitational.
