MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team could not generate any offense Friday evening, as Concordia held the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
Fortunately for SMU coach
Terry Mannor, Cardinal goalie
Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.) made sure the Cobbers stayed off the scoreboard, too, as the freshman goalie kicked out all 34 shots she faced as the two teams battled to a 0-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie at the Moorhead Sports Center.
“It was nice to come away with a (conference) point,” admitted Mannor, whose team improved to 4-9-2 in conference play and 6-12-2 overall. “We had a couple of really good scoring chances, we just couldn't capitalize on them.
“Tori was the story of the day,” praised Mannor of his freshman goalie. “She played great — making several big saves to keep us in the game.”
Herrmann was busy in the Cardinal goal, stopping nine shots in each of the first two periods, before kicking out 12 third-period shots to help send the game into overtime. In the five-minute extra period Herrmann finished with four saves.
Madison Denny picked up the shutout in goal for the Cobbers, stopping all eight SMU shots.
The Cardinals were 0-for-4 on the power play, while Concordia came up empty on both of its man-advantage opportunities.
The Cardinals will get another shot at the Cobbers on Saturday, as the two teams square off in the second game of the two-game MIAC series. Puck drops at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
