ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team did something very few teams have done against Gustavus all season — score first.

In fact, Macki Fadness' (Eau Claire, Wis.) first-period goal marked just the second time in 20 games that the second-ranked Gusties had not scored first.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, all Fadness' goal did was wake a sleeping giant, as Gustavus scored three unanswered goals — one in each period — in handing SMU a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Don Roberts Ice Arena.

Fadness scored her third goal of the season — off an assist from Katie Ehlenfeldt (Beaver Dam, Wis.) — just 1:48 into the opening period. The Gusties knotted the game six minutes alter as the two teams headed into the locker room after one period tied 1-1.

The 1-1 first-period deadlock was due in large part to the play of SMU goalie Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.), who stopped 11 of the 12 first-period shots she faced.

Herrmann was busy again in the second period, stopping 14 more shots — with Carolyn Draayer's shot at 8:14 of the period the only one to elude the freshman netminder.

Melissa Doyle gave the Gusties a little breathing room, scoring her seventh of the season on the power play at 11:27 of the third period to push GAC's advantage to 3-1.

Herrmann finished with a career-high 34 saves against the unbeaten and league-leading Gusties, while GAC goalie Tara Hoverstad stopped seven of the Cardinals' eight shots.

SMU (4-8-1 MIAC, 6-11-1) gets another shot at the Gusties on Saturday, as the Cardinals host GAC in a 2 p.m. conference showdown Saturday at the SMU Ice Arena.
