GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — For the second game in a row,
Macki Fadness (Eau Claire, Wis.) found the back of the net for the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, for the second straight day, Fadness' goal was their only one, as league-leading and No. 2-ranked Gustavus completed its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep, dropping SMU 6-1 at the SMU Ice Arena Saturday.
“I didn't think we played as well today as we did (Friday) night,” said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. “You have to give (Gustavus) a lot of credit, they are a very good team — and they proved that this weekend.
“We played hard, we didn't play hard for all 60 minutes — and against a team like Gustavus, you have to be playing at 100 percent the entire game, or they'll make you pay.”
After a scoreless first period, the Gusties jumped on the board 1:01 into the second frame, as Breanna Seebold netted her fifth of the season, beating
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) to the stick side.
The Gusties — who improved to 14-0-0 in conference play and 20-0-1 overall — would push that lead to 3-0 with back-to-back goals by Allison Eder-Zdechilik, before Fadness popped in a power play tally at the 11:08 mark to cut the deficit to 3-1 heading into the final period.
The game's final 20 minutes, however, it was all Gustavus, as the Gusties peppered Gustafson with 24 shots, including goals by Meagan Wanecke and two by Lindsey Hjelm to seal the victory.
Gustafson finished with a career-high 44 saves, while SMU managed just 16 shots on the Gustavus goal.
The Cardinals (4-9-1 MIAC, 6-12-1 overall) are back in action next weekend, traveling to Moorhead, Minn., for a pair of games against Concordia. The two teams square off at 7 p.m. on Friday, and then are back on the ice for the rematch at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
