WINONA, Minn. — Mother Nature had not been very kind to the Saint Mary's University track and field teams this spring.

Until Saturday, that is.

In fact, only one thing could have made SMU coach Shawn McMahon happier than the day's picture-perfect weather — and the Cardinals delivered that, too.

Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.), John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.) and Bryan Ortman all recorded second-place finishes to pace the SMU men, while Abby Osborne (Winthrop, Minn.) picked up a sixth-place finish, and Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.), Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) and Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) posted seventh-place efforts to lead the way for the Cardinal women.

“It was just a great day — great weather and great performances all the way around,” said McMahon. “I'm very pleased with the way we performed today. It's always great to be able to compete in front of your home crowd — and everyone really put together solid efforts.”

Borash clocked a time of 4;00.28 seconds en route to his second-place showing in the 1,500, while Soucheray stopped the clock in 15:51.88 to place second in the 5,000 and Ortman posted a leap of 12.65 meters in finishing second in the triple jump.

Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) finished third in the steeplechase, stopping the clock in 10:03.78, with Jed McGlasson (Kenai, Alaska) and Andy Meyer (Tucson, Ariz.) adding seventh-place times of 56.66 in the 400 hurdles and 18:28.67 in the 5,000. Collin Hennessy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) added throws of 42.39 and 41.82 to place ninth and 10th in the hammer throw, with Wiggert also tallying a throw of 11.99 meters in the shot put to finish 14th.

Osborne uncorked a throw of 32.09 in the javelin to place sixth, while Schommer, Mockler and Coco Booker all added seventh-place performances — Schommer notching a time of 1:03.23 in the 400, while Mockler finished the steeplechase in 14:14.32 and Booker posted a throw of 11.74 meters in the shot put. Schommer also added a ninth in the 100, racing to a time of 13.39.

Other SMU women's highlights included Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) finishing 10th in the hammer throw (45.37), Kim Puk (Naperville, Ill.) placing 12th in the 400 (1:07.00), Sara McNary (Deforest, Wis.) and Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) adding seventh-place times of 1:07.90 in the 400 and 5:03.14 in the 1,500, respectively, and Sarah Fanning finishing 14th in the long jump (4.77 meters) and 15th in the triple jump (9.66 meters).

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, with the SMU men taking part in the Concordia-St. Paul Twilight, while the SMU women are at the Tommie Twilight in St. Paul, Minn.
