WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University Cardinal 'M' Club, in association with the Alumni Association, will induct three members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame during Cardinal 'M' Club Weekend Friday-Sunday, Sept. 13-15.
The 2013 Saint Mary's University Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will honor former student-athletes Greg (Dick '84) Arens, Todd Borndale '85 and Ashley (Dingels '05) Gossen.
The trio will be honored during an awards ceremony on Friday, Sept. 13. Along with the induction of this year's Hall of Fame class, Friday's ceremony will also honor SMU's 2012-13 postseason award-winners, as well as unveiling the 2012-13 Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes.
GREG (DICK '84) ARENS
Arens was a mainstay between the pipes for the Cardinal men's hockey team, appearing in 70 games over his four-year career — and earning First-Team All-MIAC, MIAC Player of the Year and All-American honors following his senior season. Arens owns two of the program's top six single-season saves records, stopping a record-setting 953 shots during his freshman year in 1980-81, while kicking out 671 shots the following season. His 42.9 saves-per-game during the 1983-84 season are also a single-season record, while his 2,709 saves and 38.7 saves-per-game are tops in program history. One of only a handful of goalies selected as a team captain, Arens was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League following his freshman season, and spent time at the Jets' tryout camp upon graduation from Saint Mary's.
TODD BORNDALE '85
Borndale proved to be an ironman for the Cardinal baseball team, playing in 125 of a possible 126 games during his four-year collegiate career. Borndale, a career .338 hitter, enjoyed his best year in 1985, when he hit .408 and launched a school-record 14 home runs en route to First-Team All-MIAC and First-Team All-Midwest Region and All-American honors. He set single-season school records for slugging percentage (.990) and total bases (97), while his 25 walks and 38 runs scored during that senior season ranked second and third all-time, respectively. Borndale closed out his Cardinal career ranked No. 1 in home runs (23), second in walks (61) and among the top 10 in slugging percentage (.656), total bases (200), on-base percentage (.439), RBIs (73) and runs scored (82).
ASHLEY (DINGELS '05) GOSSEN
Gossen made her presence felt on more than one athletic venue, dominating both as a volleyball player and a track and field athlete. On the court, Gossen — despite missing most of her junior season due to a season-ending knee injury — appeared in 98 matches in her four –year career, compiling 1,225 kills and hitting .331, while also being named First-Team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference three times. Her 448 kills during the 2004 season rank fourth all-time, while her 394 kills as a sophomore in 2002 are ninth-best in program history. Gossen also owns two of the five-best single-season attack percentages, hitting .360 in 2004 and .343 in 2002. And there was little rest for Gossen, who moved from the court to the track, where she was a seven-time conference champion, not to mention a five-time national championship qualifier and a two-time All-American. Gossen swept the MIAC's pentathlon and heptathlon titles in school and conference record-setting fashion — twice — and her record 4,668 point total still stands. Gossen was the first-ever Saint Mary's University track and field athlete to qualifying for the national championships as a freshman in 2002, and earned All-American honors in the heptathlon (2003) and high jump (2005).
