LA CROSSE, Wis. — The weather certainly wasn't conducive to an outdoor track meet, but the Saint Mary's University track and field teams certainly made the most of it Saturday afternoon at the outdoor season-opening UW-La Crosse Invitational.

“The first outdoor meet of the season is always pretty interesting,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon, whose women placed fifth, while the SMU men were sixth. “Not only are you competing in the first outdoor meet of the season, but it always seems that you also have to battle the elements — and the wind, rain and cold definitely made it a battle out there today.”

But the Cardinals were certainly up to the challenge.

Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) and sister Maya Booker led the way for the Cardinal women, placing second in the shot put (11.45 meters) and fifth in the hammer throw (41.56), respectively, while Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn.) was seventh and Beth Scott (Rochester, Minn.) was eighth in the 1,500 (5:35.72 and 5:27.86, respectively) and Sarah Fanning was 10th in the triple jump (9.30 meters)>

On the men's side, Bryan Ortman picked up a second-place finish in the triple jump, uncorking a leap of 12.62 meters, while Jed McGlasson (Kenai, Alaska) and Collin Sheehan (Austin, Minn.) were sixth in the 400 hurdles (57.39) and 800 (2:08.49), respectively, with Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) adding an eighth in the hammer throw (40.06) and Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) adding a 20th in the 1,500 (4:06.23).

The Cardinal men are back in action on Friday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for the St. Thomas Invitational, while the SMU women are off until Saturday, when they head across town to take part in the Winona State Invitational.
