LAKE CITY, Minn. — A year ago, in his first collegiate match, Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) carded an 83 to lead the way for the Saint Mary's University men's golf team in its season-opening dual meet against Macalester.

This year, it was Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.) turn to be the Cardinals' leader in his first-ever collegiate tournament, rifling a 77 against the Scots on Friday.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Brandt was playing as an individual, not as a part of SMU's top five, so his five-over-par effort did not count toward SMU's team score.

Westerberg and Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) also posted rounds in the 70s, carding seven-over 79s, but it was not enough, as Macalester — behind a stellar collegiate debut of its own by Josh Wingardner — edged the Cardinals 324-336.

Along with the back-to-back 79s, SMU also got an 85 from Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.), a 93 from David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) and a 102 from Nico Bame (Mound, Minn.).

Along with Brandt, Dylan Altendorf (Stanchfield, Minn.) and John Lamorgese (Woodridge, Ill.) also competed as individuals for the Cardinals, posting rounds of 87 and 100, respectively.

Wingardner led the way for Macalester, earning medalist honors with a 74.

The Cardinals are back in action next week, squaring off against Bethany Lutheran in a dual match at Cedar Valley Golf Course on Thursday, before heading to Minneapolis, Minn., to take part in the Augsburg Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
