GameDay Preview
SAUK CENTER, Minn. — It wasn't the Greystone Golf Course that posed the biggest troubles for the Saint Mary's University men's golf team Saturday afternoon — it was Mother Nature.
The Cardinals, playing all 18 holes in the pouring rain, fired an opening-round 324 at the Saint John's Fall Invitational and are currently sitting in 15th place in the 23-team field.
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, shooting a six-over-par 78, while
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) chipped in a 79.
Trevor Erickson (Sparta, Wis.) finished with an 81, followed by
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.) and
David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) with 86 and 91, respectively.
The University of Manitoba carded a 298 Saturday to take a three-shot lead over Nebraska Wesleyan heading into Sunday's final round. UW-Eau Claire (304), St. Cloud State (307) and Saint John's (312) round out the top five.
Josh Wytinck carded a three-under-par 69 to grab the individual lead, holding of Morgan Rask of Saint John's, who is second after an even-par 72. Rory Doll of Nebraska Wesleyan is third after an opening-round 73, while six players are tied for fourth with 74s.
The Cardinals close out play in the 36-hole event on Sunday, moving to Blackberry Ridge Country Club in Sartell, Minn.
