GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — For the first 44 minutes Saturday afternoon, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team stymied the St. Thomas offense again and again.
And over the game's final 45 minutes it was more of the same.
It was that final minute of the opening half, however, that did the Cardinals in.
Camille Horne scored with 47 seconds remaining in the first half to break a scoreless deadlock — and St. Thomas would add an insurance goal late in the second half, as the Tommies handed SMU a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Tommies boasted a 9-0 advantage in shots — and a 5-0 edge in shots on goal — in the game's opening 45 minutes, but it wasn't until the final minute of the half that the Tommies would solve the Cardinals' smothering defense, as Horne rifled a shot that eluded SMU goalkeeper
Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) to give UST a 1-0 edge.
St. Thomas padded its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Taylor Sabrowski in the 80th minute off assists from Jenna Savino and Jaclyn Glaser to seal the win.
Halling finished with 10 saves in goal for the Cardinals, marking the 11th time in her collegiate career that the junior goalkeeper has stopped 10 or more shots in a game.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., for a 4 p.m. MIAC contest against Gustavus.
