WINONA, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team, Friday afternoon's nonconference game against UW-Eau Claire looked eerily similar to the Cardinals' last nonconference game.

For the second straight game, the Cardinals and their opponent skated to a 0-0 deadlock after the first period … and the second period.

Fortunately for the Cardinals, unlike Monday's final 20 minutes — in which Lake Forest scored five times en route to a 5-1 victory — Friday's third period went much more to their liking.

Mary DeBartolo (Chicago, Ill.) had a goal and two assists, as the Cardinals scored three times — two in a 16-second span — over the game's final 20 minutes in handing the Blugolds a 3-0 nonconference setback at the SMU Ice Arena.

"I was very pleased with the way we played today," said SMU coach Terry Mannor. "We finally put together a complete, 60-minute game — and that was really nice to see."

The Cardinals dominated from start to finish, holding UWEC without a shot on goal for the first 10 minutes of the first period, while limiting the Blugolds to just two shot attempts — and one shot on goal — in the second period.

Despite their dominance, the Cardinals still entered the third period in a scoreless deadlock.

Ingrid Curwin (Duluth, Minn.) and DeBartolo, however, quickly changed that, as Curwin — off an assist from DeBartolo — netted her first collegiate goal 6:01 into the third period, and DeBartolo added her third of the season 16 seconds later to give SMU a 2-0 advantage.

Jesse Cwik (Chicago, Ill.) pushed that advantage to 3-0 with her fourth of the season, off assists from DeBartolo and Haley Coolsaet (Grosse Ile, Mich.) to ice the victory.

While the Cardinals were busy peppering UWEC goalie Paige Turner with a season-high 52 shots, Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) stopped everything the Blugolds threw at her in the Cardinal goal, stopping all 21 shots for her second shutout of the season.

The Cardinals (3-8-0), who snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with the win, will go for the nonconference sweep of UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, as SMU heads to Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire, Wis., for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Blugolds.
