ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team was on the verge of putting an end to Gustavus' lofty, 28-game regular-season conference winning streak Friday, as the Cardinals held leads of 1-0 and 2-1.
Gustavus, however, had other ideas, as the Gusties scored three of the game's final four goals — including the game-winner four minutes into the third for a 4-3 come-from-behind win, pushing that MIAC win streak to 29.
The Cardinal got another shot at the high-powered and nationally ranked Gusties on Saturday, but this time around, Gustavus left little doubt, scoring three second-period goals en route to conference win No. 30 in a row — a 5-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Don Roberts Ice Arena.
"We played very passive in the first period and (Gustavus) grabbed the momentum," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor. "I thought we played a pretty good second period, controlling the time of possession — but once they got that first (second-period) goal, it just took all the wind out of our sails."
Unlike Friday, it was Gustavus got on the board first in the rematch Saturday, as A. Eder-Zdechlik netted her first of the season, beating SMU goalie
Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.) at 7:31 of the opening period.
That would be the only shot the Gusties would get past Shields in the opening period, as the freshman goalie stopped 13 of GAC's 14 shots. Gustavus headed into the locker room after one holding a 1-0 lead and a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Gusties would put the game out of reach in the second period, as Halie Gudmonson, Carolyn Draayer and Melissa Doyle all found the back of the net, while Lydia Wagner netted the lone goal of the third period to round out the scoring.
Shields finished with 27 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Amanda Kloep posted the 13-save shutout in goal for GAC.
The Cardinals (3-7-0 MIAC, 5-11-1 overall) are back in action on Friday, as SMU hosts St. Olaf in a 7 p.m. conference contest at the SMU Ice Arena. SMU will then travel to Northfield, Minn., on Saturday for the 3 p.m. rematch against the Oles at the Northfield Ice Arena.
