Cardinals battle Gusties to 3-3 conference tie

WINONA, Minn. — After a six-game road stretch, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team was more than ready to play in front of its own crowd.  And the Cardinals did not disappoint their fans as they came out on fire—scoring the first three goals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

But a pesky Gustavus Adolphus squad kept the pressure on and battled back to force a 3-3 tie in double overtime Wednesday night at Ochrymowycz Field.

Freshman Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded her fourth multiple-goal game this season as she scored the first two goals of the game. Her first goal came off a one-touch pass from teammate Kelli Harstad (Hampton, Minn.) in the fourth minute of the game.

Loof put the Cardinals ahead 2-0 when she scored her 10th goal of the season off a pass from Emma Schaefer (Falcon Heights, Minn.) in the 15th minute of the game.

Saint Mary's took a 3-0 advantage when Harstad scored her first goal of the season with a tight angle kick on the left side. Ellen Moran (Lakeville, Minn.) earned the assist on the goal in the 32nd minute of the game.

Gustavus was able to get on the scoreboard in the 36th minute of the game when Maddison Ackiss kicked her shot up and over Saint Mary's goaltender Victoria Perez.

Gustavus controlled the second half and closed the gap in the 54th minute of the game. A Cardinal miscue resulted in a partial breakaway for Gusties' Brittany Chase, who beat a charging Perez for a goal.

The Gusties got the game-tying goal when Chase's cross went off a Saint Mary's defender and into the net in the 85th minute of the game.

Neither team scored in either overtime. Gustavus finished with seven shots on net, while Saint Mary's had six.

The Cardinals (0-3-1 MIAC, 3-5-1 overall) return to action Saturday with a home game against Concordia at 1 p.m.
