WINONA, Minn. — Talk about a heart-breaker.
The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team entered Saturdays Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia determined to knock off the high powered Cobbers—a feat that hasn't happened since Oct. 3, 1998.
And thanks to an
Emily Loof penalty kick goal in the waning seconds of the opening half, it appeared the Cardinals were well on their way to ending that 15-game winless streak against the Cobbers.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, those hopes were dashed in heart-breaking fashion, as Concordia scored on a penalty kick of their own with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, then netted the game-winner in the second overtime in handing Saint Mary's a 2-1 setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
Loof netted her team-leading 11th goal with four seconds left in the opening half, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage at the break.
Saint Mary's would maintain that 1-0 lead until the 84th minute, when Elizabeth Robinson netted a penalty kick goal of her own to send the game into overtime.
After a scoreless first OT, it was Robinson who would find the back of the net for a second time, taking a feed from Libby Fransdal and beating Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Miranda Halling with the game-winner.
Halling finished with a season-high 10 saves for the Cardinals, who are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Buena Vista in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
