NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against St. Olaf looked eerily similar to the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team's last game against Simpson a week ago.
A week ago, the Cardinals and Storm battled to a scoreless deadlock through the game's opening 45 minutes—which is exactly what Saint Mary's and St. Olaf did Wednesday.
A week ago, Simpson broke the stalemate in the early stages of the second half—just like the Oles did Wednesday.
And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, those similarities included the final score—a 1-0 setback.
Goalkeeper
Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.) did his best to keep the Cardinals even with the league-leading Oles in the first half, stopping all five shots he faced as Saint Mary's and St. Olaf went into the halftime break knotted at 0-0.
The Oles' sixth shot-and first of the second half-however, eluded Petrich, as
Phumelela Sukati netted what proved to be the game's only goal 10 minutes into the second half.
The Cardinals (1-5-0, 5-7-1 overall) are back on the road on Saturday, traveling to Arden Hills, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. game against Bethel.
