WINONA, Minn. — Revenge.
Redemption.
Payback.
Call it whatever you want, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer coach
Pete Watkins doesn't care — Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game ended in a Cardinal victory, and that's all that mattered.
The Cardinals—who lost to the Cobbers in heart-breaking fashion a year ago when Concordia scored the game-winning goal with 1:15 remaining in the second overtime—extracted their revenge/redemption/payback with a 3-1 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
Ryan Geidner gave the Cardinals a 1-0 first-half lead with his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 16th minute, and
Arturo Aupont gave Saint Mary's a little breathing room with his first collegiate tally four minutes into the second half.
The Cobbers' Luis Martinez made it a one-goal game in the 72nd minute, but
Cody Balogh answered less than three minutes later to ice the win for Saint Mary's.
Zach Satton picked up the win in goal for the Cardinals, finishing with three saves.
The Cardinals step out of conference play on Tuesday, as Saint Mary's entertains Buena Vista in a 5:30 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
