WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's hockey teams turned more than their fair share of heads last weekend—in large part, thanks to the performances of their goaltenders.
Phil Heinle (York, Pa.) recorded 72 saves in the Cardinal men's 5-2 victory over UW-Superior last Friday and 3-2 overtime loss to sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point a day later.
Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.), meanwhile, made the most of her lone start between the pipes last weekend, stopping all 43 shots she faced in helping the Cardinal women to a 0-0 overtime tie against eighth-ranked St. Thomas.
And Monday, the Cardinal duo were honored for the efforts, sweeping Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors.
Heinle, who has started all six games in goal for the Cardinal men, was at his best over the weekend, posting a season-high 39 saves in Saint Mary's 5-2 nonconference win over UW-Superior last Friday. A day later, the Cardinal sophomore was at it again, kicking out 33 UW-Stevens Point shots—including a highlight-reel glove save late that kept the game deadlocked at 2-2.
For the season, Heinle has stopped 175 of the 190 shots he's faced, compiling a 2.48 goals-against-average and .921 save percentage.
Herrmann was equally as impressive between the pipes for the Cardinal women, finishing with a season-best 43 saves as the Cardinals battled the nationally ranked Tommies to a 0-0 deadlock last Saturday.
Herrmann—who made 15 first-period saves and 19 more in the second—picked up her second collegiate shutout in blanking St. Thomas and her 43-save effort was just one save shy of her collegiate best 44 saves against Concordia on Feb. 16, 2013.
Both Cardinal teams return to conference play this weekend. The Saint Mary's women entertain Saint Benedict for a pair of MIAC contests Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena, while the Cardinal men head to the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn., for games Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (4 p.m.) and 15th-ranked and unbeaten Saint John's.
