ST. PAUL, Minn. —
Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) had so much fun scoring her first collegiate goal last Saturday in the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team's nonconference game against St. Norbert, that the Cardinal freshman was at it again Friday night.
Henderson scored for the second time in as many games Friday, as the Cardinals kicked off a two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against St. Catherine.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Henderson's goal was all the offense they would muster, as St. Catherine used a pair of second-period goals to hand Saint Mary's a 2-1 conference setback at Drake Arena.
"This one hurts," said Saint Mary's coach
Terry Mannor. "We certainly played well enough to win tonight—we dominated play for a majority of the game—we just couldn't put the puck in the net.
"Give (St. Catherine) credit, they took advantage of the opportunities that they had—and we didn't. That was the difference in the game."
After a scoreless first period, the Wildcats broke the ice just 22 seconds into the second stanza, as Mallory Ryan beat Cardinal goalie
Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.) for her first goal of the season.
The SCU lead lasted less than four minutes, however, as Henderson scored off assists from
Kassie Lien (Grantsburg, Wis.) and
McKenna Parent (Anoka, Minn.) at 4:22 to pull the Cardinals even 1-1.
St. Catherine regained its one-goal advantage on Bailey Rasmussen's third goal of the season at 12:13, and the Wildcats would take that 2-1 lead into the game's final 20 minutes.
And thanks to the play of Herrmann and SCU goalie Kristen Pechacek, the score would remain 2-1, as Herrmann collected three third-period saves, while Pechacek stopped all 14 Saint Mary's shots in the final 20 minutes.
The Cardinals (2-2-1 MIAC, 2-5-1 overall) get another shot at the Wildcats (2-2-1 MIAC, 3-3-1 overall) on Saturday, as Saint Mary's hosts St. Catherine in a 2 p.m. MIAC contest at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
