NORTHFIELD, Minn. —
Jane Hannula (Coon Rapids, Minn.) enjoyed a career night for the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team on Friday, as the freshman recorded her first collegiate two-goal game in the Cardinals' 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over St. Olaf.
Just what do you do for an encore?
How about score your third goal of the weekend.
Unfortunately, Hannula's second-period tally was all the offense the Cardinals would generate, as St. Olaf earned in split in the teams' two-game conference series with a 2-1 win over SMU at the Northfield Ice Arena.
After failing to get a shot past SMU's
Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) in Friday's 4-0 loss, the Oles netted their first game of the series at 8:52 of the first period, as Katie Moeller finally found a way to put a shot past the Cardinals' senior goalie.
Hannula would pull the Cardinals even with her fourth of the season five minutes into the second period.
Moeller would beat Gustafson again at 16:20 of the second period, and the Oles would hold off a third-period Cardinal charge to preserve the win.
Gustafson finished with 24 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Cassie Alexander recorded 38 saves — including 27 in the first two periods combined — in goal for the Oles.
The Cardinals (4-8-0 MIAC, 6-12-1 overall) are back in action on Friday, when they travel to Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 7 p.m. conference showdown with Augsburg. SMU will then entertain the Auggies in a 2 p.m. rematch on Saturday at the SMU Ice Arena.
