WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team knew they were going to have their hands full Friday evening.

After all, Concordia took the ice boast an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) and had outscored its opponents 27-8 over those eight games.

And the Cardinals didn't do themselves any favors, spotting the Cobbers a pair of first-period goals.

Bolstered by that two-goal advantage, the Cobbers pushed that unbeaten streak to nine straight, handing SMU a 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the SMU Ice Arena.

Concordia wasted little time grabbing the momentum, as Bekah Wright scored on the Cobbers' first shot just 1:23 into the opening frame. Kelsey Vandegrift pushed CC's lead to 2-0 seven minutes later, and took that two-goal advantage into the locker room after the game's opening 20 minutes.

The Cobbers netted the only goal of the second period — a tally by Ellen Restwisch five minutes in — and Kayla Baker added an empty net goal with 1:14 remaining in the third to seal the win.

Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.) finished with 24 saves for the Cardinals, including 10 in the first period and nine more in the second, while Andrea Klug stopped all 28 SMU shots in recording the shutout for Concordia.

The Cardinals (4-11-0 MIAC, 6-15-1 overall) get another shot at Concordia (9-4-2 MIAC, 10-8-4 overall) on Saturday, as the two teams square off in the second game of their two-game conference series at the SMU Ice Arena. Face-off is set for 2 p.m.
