SUPERIOR, Wis. — The beat goes on for the Saint Mary's University track and field teams.
And so do the impressive performances.
It all started Friday night at the St. Thomas Showcase — where Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) highlighted the SMU performances by moving up to No. 2 all-time in the 5,000 with a time of 19:06.27 — and carried on into Saturday's UW-Superior Border Battle, which was highlighted by second-place finishes by
Jacob Hagen-Erickson (Austin, Minn.) and Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.).
Stolz was one of a handful of Cardinal runners to make the trek to St. Paul, Minn., to kick off the weekend at the St. Thomas Showcase. Along with the senior's stellar time in the 5,000, Andrew Merkert (St. Paul, Minn.) posted a time of 54.61 in the 400,
Alex Davis (Champaign, Ill.) and
Gabe Thiel (Elgin, Minn.) added times of 2:07.59 and 2:14.13 in the 800, and the quartet of
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn. / 15:48.19),
Jase Pater (Adrian, Minn. / 16:31.83),
Jovan Newsom (Glendale Heights, Minn. / 16:49.98) and
John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn. / 16:56.64) competed in the 5,000.
And on Saturday, Hagen-Erickson delivered a leap of 6.10 meters to finish second in the long jump, while Booker uncorked a throw of 14.41 meters en route to her second-place showing in the weight throw.
Jacob Paulson (Ellendale, Minn.) finished third in the 400, stopping the clock in 55.80, while
Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Wis.) was fifth in the men's weight throw at 15.09 meters, and
Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Minn.) placed fifth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.46 and seventh in the 300 hurdles with a time of 27.71.
Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) finished sixth in the shot put (12.77 meters),
Sherman Moga (Shoreview, Minn.) was seventh in the mile with a time of 4:51.91 and
Zach Palma (Washburn, Wis.) added a third in the triple jump (11.71 meters).
Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) was third in the mile (5:48.66), while Josie Moreno (Cicero, Ill.) and Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) were fifth and seventh in 5:57.76 and 6:02.96, respectively. Rebecca Krueger (Ashland, Wis.) also recorded a third-place showing, running an 8.29 in the 60, while adding a fourth-place showing in the 400, stopping the clock in 27.61. Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) led a 3-4 SMU finish in the 3,000, with Thiel owning a time of 11.08.25 and Siska boasting a time of 11:10.08, while Booker added a fourth-place showing in the shot put (11.46 meters), Becca Iten (Fridley, Minn.) chipped in a sixth-place showing in the pole vault with a leap of 2.91 meters and Tessa Scanlon (Cologne, Minn.) went 8.43 meters in the long jump.
The Cardinals are back in action, and back on the road, next Saturday, as SMU heads to Stevens Point, Wis., to take part in the UW-Stevens Point Eastbay Invitational.
