Wiggert leads Cardinals' Day 2 charge at MIAC

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) picked the perfect time to put together the best shot put performance of his life.

Wiggert delivered a personal-best throw of 13.61 meters to earn a ninth-place finish in the shot put and lead the way for the Saint Mary's University track and field teams during Saturday's second day of the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

St. Thomas submitted another impressive overall performance Saturday to put the finishing touches on three decades of dominance, as UST has claimed the MIAC title at each of the 30 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Tommies finished with a total of 186 points, and won by 60 points over the rest of the field. The SMU men, meanwhile, finished 11th overall.

On the women's side, St. Thomas completed the UST sweep, winning its 15th-straight conference title. St. Olaf continued an impressive performance in the distance events with another meet record and a runner-up finish with 126 points. SMU placed 12th overall.

After placing ninth in the 5,000 on Friday, Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) recorded an 11th-place finish in the 3,000 Saturday, stopping the clock in 9:14.63 Saturday, while Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a seventh-place 12.65 meters in the triple jump. Jacob Hagen-Erickson (Austin, Minn.) reached the final in the long jump Friday, finishing ninth with a leap of 6.34 meters and Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Wis.) placed 11th in the two-day heptathlon, collecting 3,645 points to finish 13th.

On the women's side, Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.), who broke the women's school record in the 5,000 on Friday, clocking a time of 18:43.93 — shattering Katie Boisjolie's 2006 record-setting time of 18:49.36 — followed up with a time of 10:51.85 to finish 14th in the 3,000.

Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) — coming off  a seventh-place performance in the weight throw on Friday with a throw of 14.67 — chipped in a throw of 11.27 meters in the shot put. Rebecca Krueger (Ashland, Wis.) clocked a time of 27.09 to place 13th in the 200, while Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) — who posted a time of 62.60 to place 11th in the 400, while sprinting to a time of 8.23 in the 60 on Friday — finished 15th in 27.40.

The Cardinals will kick off the outdoor portion of their schedule on April 5, traveling to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the UW-La Crosse Invitational.
