Booker, Newsom lead way for Cardinals at MIAC

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) and Jovan Newsom (Glendate Heights, Minn.) led the way for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams during the opening day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Friday evening.
 
Booker, making her third appearance in the conference championships, posted a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw — uncorking a toss of 45.77 meters — while Newsom made the most of his MIAC debut, finishing fifth in his heat in the 1,500 to earn a spot in Saturday's 12-man final with a qualifying time of 4:14.10.
 
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.), bother by stomach cramps, finished with a time of 33:19.35 to finish 13th in the 10,000, while SMU's other eight competitors Friday failed to reach the finals in their respective events.
 
Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) had a busy day Friday, clocking a time of  13.00 in 100, while also competing in the 200 (26.85) and 400 (62.93). Rebecca Krueger (Ashland, Wis.) chipped in times of 12.83 in 100 and 26.82 in 200, while Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Bridget Hayes (Chicago, Ill.) posted times of 5:31.10 and 5:32.15, respectively, in the 1,500.
 
On the men's side, Gus Wiggert (La Crosse, Wis.) delivered a throw of 13.04 in the shot put and Jacob Hagen-Erickson posted a leap of 6.41 meters in the long jump.
Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Wis.) stopped the clock in 17.82 in 110 high hurdles and Andrew Markert (St. Paul, Minn.) added a time of 52.11 in the 400.
 
Newsom, Wiggert, Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.), Abi Osborne (Winthrop, Minn.), Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.), Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn.) and Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Wis.) will compete for the Cardinals during the second day Saturday at St. Olaf College.
