WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer coach
Pete Watkins has found the perfect recipe for success this season.
Stir in a high-powered offense — one that scores four goals — and add a healthy helping of home field advantage, and Watkins has all the ingredients he needs.
For the second time in as many home games, the Cardinals erupted for four goals Wednesday evening in their nonconference game against Bethany Lutheran at Ochrymowycz Field.
And for the second time in as many home games, those four goals were more than enough to give Saint Mary's the victory, as the Cardinals cruised to a 4-0 win over the Vikings.
It took the Cardinals almost the entire first half to get their offense on track — almost.
Jim Dreshar (Hugo, Minn.) scored the only goal of the first half with four seconds remaining to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage heading into the break. Nine minutes into the second half,
Brett Heimerdinger (La Grange, Ill.) pushed that lead to 2-0, and back-to-back goals by
Andrew Jaworski (Racine, Wis.) nine minutes apart midway through the half rounded out the scoring.
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) picked up the win in goal, stopping both shots he faced in 71 minutes of work, while
Zach Satton (Tehachapi, Calif.) did not have to makea save during his 19 minutes of work.
The Cardinals (2-1-1 overall) are now off until next Wednesday, when they travel to Edor Nelson Field to kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Augbsurg.
