Tommies hand Cardinals 4-0 conference setback

Donny Nadeau, SMU Sports Information Director | dnadeau@smumn.edu

WINONA, Minn.—The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team had its chances against St. Thomas in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday evening at Ochrymowycz Field.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they weren't able to do anything with those chances.

St. Thomas, on the other hand, made the most of its chances, scoring a pair of goals in each half—including back-to-back penalty kick goals four minutes apart midway through the second half—in handing the Cardinals a 4-0 conference setback.

Saint Mary's held an 8-5 edge in shots in the game's opening minute, but heading into the halftime break, the Cardinals found themselves starting at a 2-0 deficit—thanks to goals by UST's Pierce Erickson in the 27th minute and Christian Elliehausen in the 44th minute.

The Tommies would ice the game early in the second half, as both Shae Bottum and Miles Stockman-Willis beat Cardinal goalkeeper Zach Satton (Tehachapi, Calif.) on penalty kicks in the 49th and 53rd minutes.

The Cardinals (0-3-0 MIAC, 3-4-1 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to St. Peter, Minn., for an MIAC showdown with the Gusties.
