MIAC Athlete of the Week ReleaseWINONA, Minn. —
Phil Heinle (York, Pa.) was a busy man between the pipes for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team in the Cardinals' two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games against Gustavus.
In fact, it wouldn't be all that surprising if the Cardinal netminder was seeing flying rubber in his sleep, after facing 77 shots against the Gusties.
Monday afternoon, Heinle was rewarded for his efforts, being named MIAC Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Heinle kicked off his busy weekend by stopping all 32 shots he faced in recording his first collegiate shutout—and leading the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory last Friday at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
The following night, Heinle was once again doing his best impersonation of a brick wall, kicking out 43 Gustie shots in Saint Mary's heartbreaking 2-1 overtime setback.
With Heinle and his 2.33 goals-against-average and .928 save percentage leading the way, the Cardinals head into this weekend's conference series against St. Olaf sporting a 3-3-2 MIAC record, and are sitting one point out of the fifth and final playoff spot—not to mention just five points out of first place.
The Cardinals (8-7-2 overall) host St. Olaf on Friday in the first game of the teams' two-game MIAC series, a 7 p.m. showdown at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. St. Olaf will turn around and host Saint Mary's in Saturday's rematch at 7:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
