Cardinals can't stop Knight seniors in 5-1 loss

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — It was Senior Day Saturday afternoon, as Carleton entertained the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team in the teams' final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season.

And, unfortunately for Saint Mary's, it was those Knights' seniors who put together a day to remember—and one the Cardinals would like to forget.

The Knights scored three goals in the game's opening 45 minutes—all by seniors—and Saint Mary's never recovered in falling to Carleton 5-1 at Bell Field.

Carleton did not waste any time getting its offense rolling, as Steven Johnson and Brandon McGarrity—two of those aforementioned seniors—scored three minutes apart before the game was even nine minutes old to put Carleton out front, 2-0.

Chris Trussel (Wenatchee, Wash.) cut the deficit to one, 2-1, taking a perfect pass from Cody Balogh (Batavia,  Ill.) and beating Carleton goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard for his third goal of the season.

The Knights would strike once more before halftime, as yet another Carleton senior, John Pedtke, found the back of the net to leave the Cardinals staring at a 3-1 deficit heading into the break.

Carleton tacked on a pair of second-half goals, the first by Tom Felton—yes, another Knight senior—with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, and the second by the only non-senior to score, Kohl Sparrman, in the game's final two minutes.

Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) finished with a career-high 10 saves in goal for the Cardinals—including several of the highlight-reel variety—while a pair of Carleton keepers combined to stop five of Saint Mary's six shots on goal.

The Cardinals (0-7-3 MIAC, 5-9-3 overall) close out their 2015 season on Sunday, entertaining Finlandia in a 2 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
