GameDay PreviewMOORHEAD, Minn. — After breaking three school records during the opening day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, the only question that remained for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams was—what are you going to do for an encore?
Break some more records, of course.
Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn.) became the fourth Cardinal to etch their name in the record books with his time of 1:25.30 in the 600, breaking the previous mark of 1:26.00 set by Benton Kodet in 2011.
And Krogman was just getting warmed up, as the freshman teamed with
Tyler Fiebig (Baraboo, Wis.),
Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.), and
Ross Kinderman (Onalaska, Wis.)—both school record-setters on Friday—to rewrite the Saint Mary's record book with a sixth-place time of 3:29.36 in the 4x400 relay.
Kinderman, coming off a record-breaking performance in the 60 hurdles on Friday—clocking a qualifying time of 8.56 en route to earning all-conference honors with a third-place finish—chipped in a four-place, honorable-mention All-MIAC performance in the triple jump Saturday, posting a leap of 13.39 meters.
Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) and
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.)—who both competed in the 5,000 on Friday—were back on the track in the 3,000 on Saturday, with Newsum recording a time of 8:58.37 for 12th, while Haley was 27th in 9:12.18.
Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.)—who competed in three events during the two-day competition—followed up her 11th in the 400 (62.01) and 12th in the 60 (8.29) on Friday, with a 10th-place showing in the 200, stopping the clock in 26.78.
The Cardinal men finished 11th in the conference standings, while the Saint Mary's women finished 12th.
St. Thomas swept the team titles—UST held off St. Olaf 162-141 to claim its 31st consecutive indoor men's title, while the Tommie women pulled away from the rest of the field, beating runner-up Bethel by 112 points in notching its 16th straight team title.
