Tournament ResultsWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team took part in its first "official" match of the spring season on Tuesday, squaring off against Viterbo in a dual match at The Bridges.
And while coach
Matt Johnson is hoping to see scores continue to drop over the remainder of the spring, he was happy with his Cardinals' performance—despite the 327-337 loss to the V-Hawks.
"I thought our guys played well," Johnson said. "It's obviously early in the spring, and you can tell we haven't been able to play much golf to this point. We had a few holes with some big numbers, which is to be expected. We just need to work on eliminating those, staying composed when they happen, and staying focused for an entire round.
"We had some very good moments, especially from Connor (Brandt) and David (Iten)," Johnson added. "Those two played very well, especially the way they finished. It was nice to see someone different step up."
Brandt carded a team-best 83, while Iten and
Blake Westerberg were a shot back at 84.
Brett Jackson chipped in an 86 and
Hunter Rau rounded out the Cardinal top five with a 91.
Viterbo's Bennett Laxton and Kris Graewin earned medalist honors with 78s, followed by Sam Nevins (85), James DeBoer (86) and Nate Smith (89).
The Cardinals brief spring season concludes this weekend, when they take part in the 36-hole the Bobby Krieg Invitational, hosted by Gustavus.
