Meet ResultsLA CROSSE, Wis. — When it comes to the 10,000 meter run, there's something about the Phil Esten Challenge that brings out the best in the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota runners.
For the second year in a row, the Cardinals broke the school record in the 10,000 Friday evening, as
Jovan Newsum shattered the school mark—set by teammate
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) at the same event in 2014—stopping the clock in 32:04.45 to finish sixth overall.
And Newsum wasn't the only person in a record-breaking mood Friday, as Maria Missurelli (Franklin, Wis.) and
Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.) also etched their names in the Cardinal record book. Dennis shattered the Cardinal record in the 400 with a second-place time of 48.54, while Missurelli clearied a record-setting 3.25 meters in the pole vault to finish sixth overall.
Along with Dennis' second-place effort in the 400, Haley placed fourth in the 5,000 with a time of 16:30.19, while
Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) was fifth in the triple jump (12.81 meters) and
Jacob Hagen-Erickson (Austin, Minn.) was fifth in the long jump (6.18 meters).
Ross Kinderman (Onalaska, Wis.) finished seventh in the decathlon (5,780), while Ortman also added a ninth in the long jump (5.90 meters), with
Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn.) adding an 11th in the 800 (1:58.65) and
Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Wis.) chipping in a 12th in the hammer throw (46.48).
Along with Missurelli's record-setting effort in the pole vault, the Cardinal women also got a 12th from Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) in the 400 (59.73) and a 14th from Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) in the hammer (43.90 meters).
