MIAC Championships Day 1 ResultsST. PAUL, Minn. —
Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Wis.) has enjoyed a good senior season as a member of the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field team.
That all changed on Friday—when that good season turned into a great one.
Kircher, competing in his final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, uncorked his best throw—ever—posting a toss of 50.83 meters that not only earned the Cardinal senior a personal best, but also a conference championship.
Kircher recorded his 50.83-meter throw on his fifth of six attempts and was more than enough to best Jesse Scheiterlein of Gustavus, who finished second with a throw of 50.05 meters.
And Kircher's effort was just one of the many highlights from a spectacular first day for the Cardinals.
Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.) qualified for Saturday's finals in the 400, clocking the second-fastest time of the day, stopping the clock in 49.40, and Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) reached Saturday's final in both the 100 (13.13) and 200 (26.37).
Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) kicked off his long-distance weekend by placing sixth in the 10,000 with a time of 32:16.92. The sophomore will complete the rare distance double on Saturday, running in the final of the 5,000.
Ross Kinderman (Onalaska, Wis.) chipped in a 10th in the long jump (6.27 meters) Friday, while
Jacob Hagen-Erickson (Austin, Minn.) and
Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) also placed in the long jump, finishing 13th (6.19 meters) and 14th (6.15 meters), respectively.
Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Minn.) added an 18th-place time of 17.88 in the 110 hurdles, with Alicia Berkenes (Buffalo, Minn.) tallying a 26th in the 800 (2:30.81).
The two-day, season-ending event concludes on Saturday, with field events starting at 2 p.m. and running events kicking off at 3 p.m.
