LAKE CITY, Minn. — It may have been their season opener, but the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team was in top form.
In fact, the Cardinals' opened the 2015 season with their lowest team score since the spring of 2010.
Not a bad way to kick off the year.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals' best wasn't quite enough Tuesday, as Macalester handed Saint Mary's a 297-317 setback in the annual MacMary Dual at The Jewel.
"It was a good start for us," understated Saint Mary's coach
Greg Moore. "The guys played very well—and hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for this group."
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, firing a career-best two-over-par 73. Westerberg's previous collegiate low was a three-over 75 during the 2012 Saint John's Invitational.
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn.) chipped in a 79 for the Cardinals, followed by
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) with an 82,
David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) with an 83 and
Hunter Rau (Plainview, Minn.) with an 88.
Macalester's Josh Wingardner earned medalist honors, firing a one-under 70.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday and Sunday, heading to Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake, Minn., to take part in the 36-hole Augsburg Invitational.
