RIVER FALLS, Wis. — A year ago, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team got a pair of goals from
Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to beat UW-River Falls 2-1 in the teams' nonconference season opener.
Tuesday evening, the same two teams took the field to kick off the 2015 season—and once again, the winning team found the back of the net two times.
Unfortunately, this time around, it was the Falcons who had the upper hand, scoring single goals in each half in handing the Cardinals a 2-0 nonconference setback.
The Falcons got on the board six minutes into the first half—taking advantage of a Cardinal own goal—before getting a goal from Abby Soderholm 12 minutes into the second half to ice the win.
Aubrie Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) finished with seven saves in goal for the Cardinals, while UW-River Falls goalie Erica Cimochowski stopped both Saint Mary's shots she faced in earning the shutout.
The Cardinals (0-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, hosting UW-Superior in a 3 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
