WEST DUNDEE, Ill. — The career-round parade continued for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team Friday afternoon.
Less than a week after
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn.) set a new school record with a career-best three-under-par 69 during the second round of the Augsburg Invitational,
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) decided it was his turn to get into the act.
Westerberg, the Cardinals' leading golfer in each of his four seasons, fired an even-par—and career-low—71 share the lead after the opening 18 holes of the Carthage/Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament at Randall Oaks Golf Club.
Fueled by Westerberg's 71—not to mention two more scores in the 70s—the Cardinals found themselves sitting in 12th place in the 19-team field heading into Saturday's final round.
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) recorded his third straight round of 75 or lower, posting a four-over 75, while Brodt added a 77 and
Hunter Rau (Plainview, Minn.) rounded out the top four with an 82.
Westerberg shares the opening-day lead with David Burnham of Wheaton (Ill.), and Carthage's Kyle Donovan and Nate Lee. Carthage holds down the top team spot with a 286, seven shots better than North Central (Ill.) and eight in front of Wisconsin Lutheran.
The final round of the two-day tournament will take place Saturday, once again at Randall Oaks Golf Club.
