WEST DUNDEE, Ill. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf did a little mountain climbing Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals, sitting in 12th place after the opening day of the Carthage/Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament, climbed six spots—shooting a second day 299 to finish sixth with a 36-hole 604.
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.), who carded a career-best even-par 71 to share the first-round lead, followed that up with a four-over 75 to finish tied for third—with, among others, teammate
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta).
As good as Westerberg was in Friday's opening round, Jackson was equally as good on Saturday, as the sophomore fired his own career-best even-par 71 to share that third-place spot with Westerberg, Jarett Simoson of Carthage and Durham Ghelfi of Lake Forest.
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn.) chipped in a two-day 149—including a second-round 72—while
Hunter Rau (Plainview, Minn. / 82-82—164) and
David Iten (Fridley, Minn. / 83-81—164) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.
Saint Mary's is back in action next Saturday and Sunday, taking part in the Saint John's Invitational. Saturday's opening round will be held at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell, Minn., while Sunday's final 18 holes will take place at Greystone Golf Course in Sauk Centre, Minn.
