COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. —
Jim Dreshar (Hugo, Minn.) has been a scoring machine for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team, as the junior scored his third goal in six games for the Cardinals against Saint John's Saturday afternoon.
And thanks to Dreshar's goal late in the first half, the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the break.
Unfortunately, the SJU defense clamped down on Dreshar and the rest of the Cardinal offense over the final 45 minutes—and the Johnnie offense, silenced in the opening half, roared back to life.
SJU scored four times in the second half—including twice in a nine-minute span early, as the Johnnies rallied for a 4-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Cardinals.
Dreshar got the Cardinals on the board in the 43rd minute, but the lead did not last long, as SJU's Alex Niederloh scored the first of his two goals just 1:26 into the second half to knot the game at 1-1.
Sam Newman netted his second of the year nine minutes later to give the Johnnies the lead for good, and Niederloh and Nic Kramer added insurance goals in the 73rd and 80th minutes to seal the win.
Evan Claffy (Joliet, Ill.) finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while SJU goalkeepers Kevin Lebahn and Conor Failor combined to stop six of the seven Saint Mary's shots they faced.
The Cardinals step out of conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Indianola, Iowa, for a 4 p.m. nonconference matchup with Simpson.
