INDIANOLA, Iowa — After managing just three goals in their last four games combined, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team kicked its offense into high gear—scoring three times in its nonconference game against Simpson Wednesday.
And the Cardinals needed all three.
Saint Mary's got a pair of goals from
Jared Wolt (Farmington, Minn.)—including the game-winner in the fifth minute of the first overtime—lifting the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Storm.
Simpson wasted little time kicking off the scoring, as Darius Doswell got the Storm on the board just 2:32 into the opening half. The Cardinals answered eight minutes later on
Sean Butcher's (Cave Creek, Ariz.) second tally of the season.
The Storm regained the lead, 2-1, before the half ended, but the Cardinal defense—and Wolt on offense—took charge in the second half.
Wolt netted his third goal of the season in the 72nd minute, then added his team-leading fourth of the season at 4:22 of overtime, knocking home a rebound of a
Chris Trussell (Wenatchee, Wash.) shot that clanged off the post, to give the Cardinals' the victory.
Evan Claffy (Joliet, Ill.) picked up the win in goal for the Cardinals, stopping all five shots he faced after replacing starter
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) to open the second half. Zach McEntee finished with three saves in goal for the Storm.
The Cardinals (3-4-0 overall)—who snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory—return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting Bethel in a 1 p.m. matchup at Ochrymowycz Field.
